a renovated, light-filled public library with a new community wing and reimagined site.

The library served the community on this site since 1959 and had grown through multiple additions, resulting in a confusing plan and dim interior spaces. A bond referendum funded a comprehensive transformation that consolidates program, replaces aging systems, and creates a more legible, accessible building for patrons and staff.

Design moves organize partitions along the existing structural grid while large glazed openings preserve visual connections. Six 15' x 15' roof monitors introduce daylight deep into the plan, and a new 4,800 sf wing provides a stepped-floor community room, gallery, and improved vertical connection between basement and first floor.

project narrative

  • The original 34,000 sf building had accumulated ad hoc additions and an unclear internal logic, making wayfinding and supervision difficult.

Central spaces lacked natural light and the mechanical and lighting systems were overdue for replacement.

The client sought a design that would clarify circulation, expand public programming, and reassert the library’s civic presence on the site.

  • Building on the existing structural order, the concept re-establishes clarity through a regimented partitioning strategy and internal transparency. Large glazed openings and a series of roof monitors create a hierarchy of daylit zones.

Where stacks sit between monitors, they define intimate, light-filled study areas while maintaining open sightlines for staff and visitors.

  • The team placed new partitions on the structural grid to produce an open but legible plan and inserted six substantial roof monitors to draw daylight into the building’s core.

A new 4,800 sf wing houses a stepped-floor community room and gallery, while mechanical systems were upgraded and LED lighting installed. Site redesign improves vehicular flow, parking, and creates a south entry plaza and a reading courtyard.

project outcome

Circulation clarifies through legible routes that connect the principal entry, reading areas, and program spaces. Clear sightlines support supervision and make movement intuitive for visitors and staff.

Daylight penetrates deep into interior zones through a sequence of roof monitors and expanded glazing, reinforcing a hierarchy of brighter communal areas and more intimate study alcoves. Varied light levels improve visibility, reduce reliance on artificial lighting, and support a calmer spatial experience.

Public spaces accommodate a range of activities from small gatherings to larger events, while stepped seating and open galleries reinforce flexible use. Upgraded HVAC and lighting systems support comfort and operational efficiency, contributing to the building’s resilience and ease of maintenance.

let’s continue the conversation

Every project begins with listening. If you’re considering a new campus, building, or landscape, we’d welcome the chance to talk through your goals, challenges, and aspirations. Our team works collaboratively to shape places that feel grounded, connected, and built to serve people well over time.
