a campus that unites learning, landscape, and community life
The University of the West Indies Five Island Campus establishes a new academic home in Antigua, envisioned as a place where learning, research, and community life converge. Phase One defines the campus core with a sports complex and an instructional and learning resource center that support interdisciplinary study, student life, and regional engagement.
The plan draws from both intimate quadrangles and open civic promenades, balancing reflection with social exchange. Shaded colonnades guide movement across the site while framing views to landscape and sea. Buildings are shaped to welcome daylight, encourage visibility, and connect academic, athletic, and social spaces into a cohesive campus experience.
project narrative
-
The new campus is tasked with serving a diverse student body while advancing research, entrepreneurship, and community engagement across Antigua and the Caribbean.
The site’s sloping terrain and tropical climate require buildings that manage movement, shade, and environmental performance with care. At the same time, the university seeks to unify academic, athletic, and social programs into a coherent setting that feels both connected and adaptable.
-
The design brings together two enduring campus traditions: the intimate courtyard and the open civic promenade.
Academic and residential spaces gather around sheltered quadrangles that support focus and belonging, while a central spine encourages movement, exchange, and shared experience.
This dual structure creates a campus that feels both grounded in tradition and open to evolving patterns of learning and collaboration.
-
Buildings respond directly to climate and topography through shaded walkways, layered sections, and clear circulation.
The sports complex steps with the land, linking field, arena, and community spaces while opening views across the site.
The instructional and learning resource center organizes programs along daylit bars anchored by a planted central spine, with forms and orientation shaped to capture light, frame views, and support flexible use over time.
project outcome
The campus establishes a clear and welcoming framework for academic and community life, where movement between buildings feels intuitive and connected to the landscape.
Shaded paths and open views support comfort in the tropical climate while encouraging daily interaction. Daylight reaches deep into learning spaces, reinforcing a sense of openness and shared purpose.
Together, the buildings create a cohesive environment that supports study, gathering, and growth across disciplines. The result is a resilient foundation for the university’s long-term role in the region.
